Marsh Is.#298 Fall of Manila - 1992 Imperforate Mint Issue

January 2, 1942 Imperial Japan's plans for control in the Pacific focused on three strategic operations - the conquest of the British in Malaya, crippling the powerful U.S. naval component at Pearl Harbor and insuring that their valuable oil supply lines from the captured Dutch East Indies would not be compromised by the U.S. air and naval forces on the Philippine Islands. The Japanese Air Force's numerous raids on December 7 dealt a devastating blow to military air fields on the Philippines. Landing expeditions by the Japanese invaders went ashore at three different locations north, west and south of Manila. Knowing that his beleaguered forces could not defend the city of Manila, General Douglas MacArthur began to move his 30,000 troops onto Corregidor, the tiny island fortress that protected the entrance to Manila Harbor. It was MacArthur's hope that his troops could hold out long enough for reinforcements to arrive.
