Marsh Is.#297 Arcadia Conference - 1992 Imperforate Mint Issue
January 1, 1942 One week following the attack on Pearl Harbor, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill was sailing for the United States. The purpose of this trip, known as the Arcadia Conference, was to meet with President Roosevelt and establish a unified military strategy and chain of command needed to defeat the Axis powers of Germany, Italy and Japan. In order to achieve such goals, the initial 26 signatory nations elaborated on the purposes and principles in the Atlantic Charter. The Declaration of the United Nations championed religious freedom and guaranteed human rights. Two specific pledges were also included: 1) Every nation would employ all military and economic resources against the Axis powers; and 2) No individual country would negotiate a separate armistice treaty with the belligerents. An additional 51 countries would sign the Declaration of the United Nations before the end of the war!
