#1901 - 5.9¢ Bicycle - coil

A bicycle, or bike, is a pedal-driven, human-powered vehicle with two wheels attached to a frame, one behind the other. Introduced in the 19th century, bicycles now number about one billion worldwide and are the principle means of transportation. Although the design of modern bicycles is largely standardized, early bikes varied greatly in their design. This stamp depicts the penny-farthing, or "boneshaker", design. The penny-farthing was accident prone and it wasn't uncommon to see someone "taking a header" (flipping over the handlebars). Scott 1901 Bicycle
