Marsh Is.#300 Battle of Java Sea - 1992 Imperforate Mint Issue

February 27, 1942 Following their victorious campaigns in Malaya and Burma, the Japanese Imperial war machine set its sights on the mineral riches on the Dutch East Indies island of Java, which could secure the western flank of the rapidly-growing Japanese Empire. The Dutch destroyed the massive oil refineries and oil storage facilities in anticipation of the invasion. A hastily-formed naval strike force made up of 14 Australian, Dutch, British and American warships moved to forestall the enemy's landing. The Allies faced significant odds against the invaders. The Japanese had aircraft available for reconnaissance and protection, superior naval strength and an advanced, ship-launched torpedo. All that firepower spelled defeat for the Allies. Java was in total control of the Japanese by March 8, 1942.
