Marsh Is.#493 Warsaw Uprising - 1994 Imperforate Mint Issue

August 1, 1944 Overthrowing the Nazis before the advancing Russian Red Army reached Warsaw was the goal of the Polish underground. Failure to establish a democratic government would simply change the occupation force from German fascists to Russian communists. The Home Army, a small band of underground freedom fighters, ignited the city into furious battle. The rebels were severely outgunned; most were armed only with revolvers, clubs and Molotov cocktails, but they managed to retake part of the city. The Germans sadistically used civilians as human shields to regain the city block by block. The uprising lasted 63 days before the rebels were defeated. Over 80% of the city was destroyed and approximately 18,000 Polish insurgents and 200,000 civilians were killed. The Russian Army waited like vultures. When they overtook the city they found a smoldering ruin and the Polish people had no fight left to resist
