Marsh Is.#496 MacArthur Returns/Philippines - 1994 Imperforate Mint Issue

October 20, 1944 When General MacArthur left Corregidor following a massive defeat in 1942, he vowed to return. Two years later, the largest armada ever assembled in the Pacific war converged on the Island of Leyte, located in the center of the Philippines. Once captured, the Philippines would serve as a base for attacks on Japanese-controlled China, Formosa and Japan. In the beginning the assault seemed promising, but complications soon arose. Aircraft carriers damaged by kamikaze fighters reduced U.S. air superiority and allowed the enemy to reinforce its defenses. Foul weather also plagued the U.S. Navy as monsoon rains made it difficult to locate enemy targets. Despite these setbacks, the U.S. achieved a decisive victory. The Japanese lost 60,000 men and their supply lines of raw war materials from the Dutch East Indies were severed. The victory also made a hero of General MacArthur, who had kept his promise to return and liberate the Philippines.
