Publicizing the 1901 Pan-American Exposition held in Buffalo, New York, this 2¢ stamp pictures the Empire State Express pulled by an engine known as "Locomotive 938", built in 1898 and operated by the New York Central and Hudson River Railroad. The Empire State Express was the flagship of the line and could cover the 436 miles between New York and Buffalo in 7 hours including stops, one of the fastest passenger trains of its day. The Pan-American Exposition series, America's first bi-colored commemoratives, showed the world many of the technological advances achieved by the turn of the century. They were on sale at post offices for only six months while the Pan-American Exposition was open.
