#4476 - 44¢ Julia de Burgos

Activist for civil rights and an esteemed poet, the Puerto Rican nationalist Julia de Burgos (1914-1953) fought for the rights of women before it was socially acceptable. Her writings reflected her struggles, taking on themes of depression, intimacy, and social oppression. In 1953, she collapsed on the streets of New York with no identification or family to contact. She passed away in the hospital from pneumonia and was given a pauper’s burial until her friends discovered her whereabouts and returned her remains to Puerto Rico for a hero’s burial. After her untimely death at the age of 39, several monuments were erected and locations renamed in her honor. Scott 4476 Julia de Burgos
