One of only 2 crane species native to North America, the Whooping Crane is also the tallest bird found on the continent. Pushed to the brink of extinction at one point there were only 21 wild Whooping Cranes known to exist. Typically found in marshy areas, the Whooping Crane feeds on anything from small amphibians, fish and mammals to berries and aquatic plants. Conservation efforts and captive breeding programs have brought that number up to over 400, but the future of this majestic bird remains uncertain as their habitat continues to be threatened.
