#3611 - 34¢ Longleaf Pine Forest - sheet of 10

Located in the southeastern region of the United States, the Longleaf Pine ecosystem is home to numerous plant and animal species that can be found nowhere else in the world. The ecosystem gets its name from the tall conifer pines that dominate most of the area. In addition to endangered animal life, such as the red-cockaded woodpecker, this unique habitat is home to several fascinating species of carnivorous plants. Unfortunately, over 90% of this once lush ecosystem has been destroyed since the arrival of European settlers, with only about 3 million acres remaining of the estimated original 60 million. Educational and beautiful, the Postal Service printed an illustrated identifier of all 27 highlighted species on the back of this mint sheet of 10 stamps. Scott 3611 Longleaf Pine Forest
