Often called “rainforests of the sea”, coral reefs account for less than 0.1% of the world’s ocean area, but provide homes to at least 25% of all marine species. These beautiful, natural formations are created by corals, which are marine invertebrates, that secret a calcium carbonate exoskeleton. The coral and other marine life develop a complex and delicate ecosystem, which is under threat from rising temperatures and pollution.
