#1869 - 50¢ Chester W. Nimitz

Unable to obtain an appointment to West Point (there were no more appointments available), Chester W. Nimitz ended up at the United States Naval Academy. Nimitz went on to establish the first Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps and was selected Commander in Chief of the United States Pacific Fleet following the attack on Pearl Harbor. Nimitz organized his forces to halt the Japanese advance and went on the offensive. Allied forces under Nimitz's command defeated the Japanese at the Battle of the Coral Sea, Midway, and the Solomon Islands Campaign. Scott 1869 Chester W. Nimitz
