#1844 - 1¢ Dorothea Dix
Dorothea Dix was a teacher and children's author before she embarked on her crusade to better the conditions of prisons and mental health facilities. Beginning in her home state of Massachusetts, Dix authored her Memorial to the Legislature of Massachusetts in 1843, winning better institutional conditions across the Commonwealth. During the Civil War Dix served as superintendent of women nurses for the Union Army. Returning from the war, Dix was later responsible for the founding or enlarging of 32 mental hospitals throughout the world! Scott 1844 Dorothea Dix
