#1863 - 22¢ John J. Audubon
John James Audubon was a French-American ornithologist, naturalist, hunter, and painter. He is remembered for painting, cataloguing, and describing the birds of North America. A true perfectionist, Audubon often burned his initial work to force continuous improvement. In one instance, rats devoured his entire collection of drawings. Audubon used this mishap as the impetus to re-do his drawings to an even higher standard. Scott 1863 John J. Audubon
