#1857 - 17¢ Rachel Carson
Trained as a marine biologist, Rachel Carson authored several books exploring the whole of ocean life. Although these works made Carson independently wealthy, Carson is best remembered for advancing the global environmental movement. Her book "Silent Spring" brought public attention to the problems of synthetic pesticides, led to a nationwide ban on DDT, and inspired the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency.
