#1853 - 10¢ Richard Russell

The son of the chief justice of the Georgia Supreme Court, Richard B. Russell was born into a prominent Georgia family. Although a founding member and leader of the Conservative coalition, Russell at first supported the New Deal and was not opposed to certain social legislation. Russell was the chief sponsor of the National School Lunch Act of 1946 which provided proper nutrition for all school children and subsidized agriculture. Scott 1853 Richard Russell
