#1859 - 19¢ Sequoyah

A Cherokee silversmith, Sequoyah independently created an alphabet for the Cherokee language. Completed in 1821, the alphabet made reading and writing in Cherokee possible. The event was one of the only times in recorded history that a member of a non-literate people independently created an effective writing system. Sequoyah's system was officially adopted in 1825 and rapidly spread throughout the Cherokee Nation. Scott 1859 Sequoyah
